a5c7b9f00b When a crusading chairperson of the military budget committee pressures the would be Navy secretary to begin full gender integration of the service, he offers the chance for a test case for a female trainee in the US Navy's elite SEAL/C.R.T. selection program. LT. Jordan O'Neill is given the assignment, but no one expects her to succeed in an inhumanly punishing regime that has a standard 60% dropout rate for men. However, O'Neill is determined to prove everyone wrong.
A female Senator succeeds in enrolling a woman into Combined Reconnaissance Team training where everyone expects her to fail.
A self serving female Senator, played by Anne Bancroft, gets a female placed in the Navy Seals. Demi Moore puts some added muscle to her great looking frame. Ms. Moore is Lt. Jordan O'Neil and she is put in the dubious position of proving that women can keep up with their male counterparts during the rigors of military training. Director Ridley Scott keeps the pace steady enough that you don't want to turn your head. Many situations are convoluted, but make for an interesting movie. This is a serious action/drama that shouldn't be taken too seriously. Other cast members of note are Viggo Mortensen, Kevin Gage, Morris Chestnut and David Vadim. Worth watching more than once.
Just take a look at the wide range of thoughts here and nowhere else is this truer. People who have been in the military saying it's real and not, people who have not saying it's real and not, all challenging each other.

Then we have the Ridley Scott is a moron/genius crew who compare this to other workswellallowing it to stand on its own. Some compare it to war flicks, which it is not, though it is clearly military. Some compare it to Bruckheimer works etc. etc. whatever…

On a personal note, for the men, this is a film that can appeal to the machismo side of hoo-ahh, while for women, it makes a statement whether that was its intended purpose or not. Regardless, if one is able to step away from preconceived notions and "suspend disbelief," it might be found to be entertaining.

Because the DVD has no extras, we cannot know exactly what might have been intended other than to fill theater seats, which is the ultimate purpose of most Hollywood movies. I'm sure old interviews might be tracked down, but who cares, really?

Technically, I think it is well done. I dug (spoilers) the ominous tone of the cinematography like a thunderstorm about to wash over one. I do agree with another reviewer that Demi Moore has picked some rotten tomatoesfarworks in which to star, but I thought this was one of her best. She definitely is something to look at here.

For those whose ideas it does not support, get over it…unless you write and direct your own films, you are never going to be satisfied. This definitely is a cut above a lot of the other tripe out here pushing the gung-ho militaristic thriller way. If you don't think it original, just compare it to any Steven Seagal flick after his breakthrough work "Above the Law." Casey Ryback beats thugs to death on a train. Ryback beats 'em to death on a big boat. Nico Toscani is Casey Ryback in "Under Siege 7"…

Still thinking about it..?
If you're looking for a film that addresses a woman's place in a combat unit, keep waiting. If you want a film where a woman can get big muscles and shoot guns and have her husband still love her, here you are.
As the first 'test case' of a woman to undergo SEAL training in the US Navy's elite Combined Reconnaissance Team (CRT), Lt Jordan O'Neill (Demi Moore) demands to be treated like all the other guys and attempts to prove her ability …although everyone else expects her to fail. G.I. Jane is based on a screenplay by American screenwriters David Twohy and Danielle Alexandra. They're ship fenders: they're hung between Naval vesselsbumpers to prevent damage from ships docked next to each other that would collide if the fender weren't there. The fenders are large, bulky, heavy, and are useda test of both strength and teamwork for the trainees. It's the Navy equivalent of a dunce cap to show that Cortez (David Vadim) had shamed the rest of the company by not helping O'Neill over the wall at the end of the obstacle course. Master Chief Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen) explains that SEALs don't leave their crew members behind. Urgayle wanted to show the entire trainee company that Cortez acted inappropriately. Later,O'Neill is walking away from the Master Chief's quarters, Cortez is shown digging a hole with the oarpunishment. "Head" is a Navy term for toilet. "Dropped On Request". Urgayle and his command staff use it on their roster board to refer to anyone who leaves the training program before completing it—hence the few trainees we see ringing the bell. The US Navy SEAL program has a very high dropout rate,we hear explained at the beginning of O'Neill's training. The program is deliberately tough because the Navy wants recruits that can handle the hard demands of the work they do. Using her experiencea topographical analyst, O'Neill surmises that the Master Chief is not about to lead the Libyans to the spot where the team is waiting to rally with the Las Vegas and would, most likely, follow a southwest wash instead. They make their way near to the mouth of the wash and set up an ambush, planting mines in a "kill zone" and hiding in wait behind the rocks. As O'Neill predicted, the Chief comes barrelling down the wash with the Libyans directly behind him. The team attempts to cover him, but Urgayle is hit by two Libyan bullets and falls in the "kill zone." O'Neill rushes into the minefield and, with McCool's (Morris Chestnut) help, drags Urgayle out. The mines are then detonated, and the team extracted by helicopter. Some time later, back at the SEAL training facility, the successful graduates are accepted to the CRT and given their pins from Urgayle. In the final scene, O'Neill opens her locker and finds a copy of D.H. Lawrence's Selected Poems with a Navy Cross marking the page containing the poem "Self Pity". She turns to see Urgayle, his leg in a brace, walking out of the locker room but not before flashing her a short, congratulatory smile. It would seem strange that Urgayle would give his decoration to someone but he likely did it because O'Neill dragged him out of a very dangerous situation in much the same manner that Urgayle dragged a comrade to safety, the action that got him the decoration in the first place. It's also done to show the high respect that Urgayle now has for Jordan for completing such a difficult training course and to thank her for rescuing him.
